HERDING CATS by Sarah Andersen

HERDING CATS is a collection of the “Sarah’s Scribbles” comics. The comic strip was initially found on the Internet. HERDING CATS has two distinct sections. The first is a collection of the “Sarah’s Scribbles” comics. While often humorous and quite relatable, the comics in this collection don’t appear to have any overall connecting theme or plot. They are a series of slice-of-life comics that many people can relate. The second section of the book is more of an inspirational message to anyone who is a creative person. The essay, “Making Stuff in the Modern Era: A Guide for the Young Creative,” is told in both text and comics. It’s an uplifting message warning of the dangers of the Internet and social media. Overall, I enjoyed HERDING CATS, however, while I found the comics in the first section to be humorous and quite relatable, it was the graphic novel essay in the last part of the book that really makes the book stand out overall.

Fairy Tales With a Cat Twist

Author Yasmine Surovec has used her “Cat Vs Human” comic to tell stories in graphic novel form as well as inspire a book of cat-centered poetry. Now, Surovec takes on classic fairy tales in CAT VS HUMAN FAIRY TAILS. In this book, several different fairy tales are re-told through the lens of “Cat Vs Human”. The stories retold are: Rapunzel, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, The Ugly Duckling, The Princess and the Frog, The Princess and the Pea, Jack and the Beanstalk, The Little Mermaid, The Pied Piper, Sleeping Beauty, and The Little Match Girl. Unlike the original stories, all of these re-tellings in CAT VS HUMAN FAIRY TAILS have happy endings. Although cats are front and center in this book, CAT VS HUMAN FAIRY TAILS is a book that even those who aren’t cat lovers can enjoy.

This Just In...

Based upon the author's own life, BREAKING CAT NEWS is a series of comics that imagines the three cats in one family (Elvis, Puck, and Lupin) as if they were reporters reporting on the news of the day. Everything from a spider on the ceiling, to their woman owner taking a nap, to buying new cat food, and even the arrival of a baby are explored through the eyes of these cat reporters. The incidents are filled with humor and are taken from real life. BREAKING CAT NEWS is a perfect little gift book for the cat lover in your life.
